The story of “Jack and the Beanstalk” can be traced back to ancient times, reflecting belief in a “Tree of Life”, able to connect earth to heaven. As a modern fairy tale, it has been a controversial story, because different versions have made the different characters into both heroes and villains, with Jack, his mother, the giant and his wife all capable of appearing as either. In reality, the tale is one of theft, betrayal and even cannibalism, all designed to instil into children a sense of right and wrong. However, we would like to think that our version is much more gentle ! The story has been filmed many times, the first time in 1902 and the most recently in March of this year and Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, Tom & Jerry and Bart Simpson have all appeared in versions. The giant’s cry of “Fee-Fi-Fo-Fum” appears in Shakespeare’s King Lear.
